Yesterday, June 24, 2013, the Katie Couric show was about different sleeping problems and solutions. Of course sleep apnea was discussed among many others. A Wellness Coach named David Jack was on there presenting many different ideas, some we've all seen before & some new. Mr. Jack modeled Oral Motor Exercises stating new research that they are being used for sleep apnea. I'm not surprised that the Speech Pathologist was finally brought into the discussion as this includes all of the anatomy & physiology we specialize in just as we were finally brought into swallowing, however, as far as I know, SLP's have not yet been brought into the sleep world officially. Yet, I cannot find said "new research" discussed by David Jack, Wellness Coach of Mens Health Magazine that OME's or Oral Motor Exercises such as Lingual protrusion and elevation for one is to assist with somehow widening the pharynx during sleep when OME's have always been somewhat controversial in the SLP world alone. I'm SURE we all saw the YOUTUBE video of the boy who heard his father speaking for the first time, just as us SLP's are used to seeing cochlear implant patients hearing for the first time. Although I did tweet about it the same day, I would just like to notify everyone that I posted the FDA approval for a few posts below. and post the video of the boy here in case you missed it, b/c it's too precious!!! :) |
